London departures obviously dominate. In May they accounted for 72% of total traffic; a proportion which is inflated because some of the more important regional airports, along with a compensating London City, have yet to announce how they fared in the latest month
At the total passenger level UK internationals were obviously worse than in April but so much better than they were in the darkest days of February and March. However, the May numbers contradict foolish predictions about an end to traffic difficulties. Anecdotally, the difficulties aired publicly by British Airways management would tend to suggest that the airline's forward booking situation is not encouraging.

With the omission of London City, the (7.5%) traffic reduction recorded for May is broadly in line with the results from the last Quarter of 2008. There is no doubt that the premium end of the international business has been badly hit. But it is also true that the LCC segment is also affected out of London. Stansted makes the case; its internationals were down (18.3%) in the month.

Destination Countries

There is no good news within the leading destination countries:
◊ Spain was the largest destination in May and it was down (13.1%)
◊ the USA fell by (9.3%)
◊ Germany was down by (10.5%)
◊ the decrease in Ireland was almost (14%) points. |
The result is that the country destination forecasts are further reduced as a result of this latest data input. There is talk of recovery and unemployment rises.
